What needs to be done this week. All items must be done by midnight Sunday, April 29 You must write up 3 blog posts, detailed below, one summarizing all things done on this checklist, one for your final project, and one for a final reflection.

Schedule a 30 minute block of time to review your ds106 portfolio Between Monday April 30 and Friday, May 4. Use the tungle.me calendar or contact me directly. Provide at least 3 options for times to meet. IF YOU DO NOT MAKE AN APPOINTMENT, YOU CANNOT PASS THIS CLASS. Is that clear?

Organize your blog to be able to show Assignments by type, examples of course participating, daily creates, tutorials written (4), assignments created (4), best of work.

Archiving Your Blog

You are required to create a backup on UMW Blogs We will do an export/import process on Friday. Tonight, we will create a holding spot; as a suggestion use the domain for your blog as its name.

Edit Your profile on the ds106.us site to indicate the URL for your UMW archive.

Options for future of your blog- let go, or migrate for free to Hippie Hosting service (details provided Thursday).

Final Projects Post At least 5 paragraphs, including embedded/linked media, and web links to sources as appropriate. This post should fully explain your project to someone not familiar with it. Suggestions to include the idea behind/inspiration behind it; what does it mean to you? what is the story? what makes it storytelling? Describe the process for the making of, including links to all source media.

Final Reflection Post Again, at least five paragraphs inwardly reflective on this course experience. Cite yourself by links to previous work. These are items you might consider; this is not a list of questions to ask, but ones to guide you. This is your reflection.

Return to your original post on personal cyperinfrastructure, and write a response/update after your course experience.

What does storytelling mean to you now?

What did you gain the most from this course?

Talk about your best work on assignments and dailycreate- talk about why you picked them.

What would you say to future students about this class?

If you were in charge of this class, what would you change?

In the video section of the course we have already entered into the fray of video remixes and discussed abut the notion of everything as a remix. For this week, we are going to experiment with a new appliance in the ds106 cupboard- a remix of ds106 assignments.

Here is how it works, go to the new ds106 remixer site at http://remix.ds106.us/ – yes it is a bit ragged and raw. The new tool we have created is called the Remix Generator. When it loads, it will randomly choose one of the hundreds of ds106 assignments; as well it will serve up one of what we call “Remix Cards” which is a certain twist or variation to apply to the assignment.

Your task is to then interpret this as a new assignment- and do it. Not only that, we want you to look at the examples that were done for the original assignment, and use media from one of these as your starting point.

For example, one combination is combining the Wiggle Spectroscopy (visual assignment) with the Go Emo remix card – so the challenge there would be to create a wiggle visual that features an emo type character. To do this I might download the GIF created at http://www.generousworld.net/?p=101 and try to edit it to change a character.

It’s tricky, and perhaps not possible. We are not as interested in what fabulous creations you can make, but how you can write up your and justify your interpretation of the remix assignment.

The stars are compounded for remix- it is the sum of the original assignment’s rating and the rating for the card, so you can score upwards of 8 stars per remix assignment.

As such, your task for week 11 is to complete 15 stars of Remix Assignment, blogged, and tagged with the tags provided by the remix assignment.

As well, keep blogging about your progress on your projects- the end is near!

This week in ds106 I am asking my students to do a 5 minute overview of a technique or trick they learned in video editing by showing one of their video projects. I’m getting a lot out of it myself as the students teach and give each other feedback in class.

Tonight’s demos included:

Kierra’s Movie Trailer Mashup mixing The Prphan and Annie

Tiffany’s Lesson’s with Movie Maker Live for the 5 second / 5 movies Kissing Archetypes

Stephanie’s Day at Work watch ehr camera track the store where she works, the effects make it.

Christie’s Silent Bourne (“character was easy since he does not say much”)

Matt’s Hugo meets Inception mashuo (the pacing and timing are impeccable)

Keelin’s Educational Tutorial (how to print paper made so easy, great retro effects)

Saad’s King Kong in the Silent Era uses great effects in Sony Vegas as well as use of layered audio for effects.

Liz’s Silent Blade Runner nifty editing and gritty look with After Effects.

Danny’s How to do a Drum Cover done with iMovie and Jing screen casting software

Hannah’s Alice in Silent Land another with great old effects and music.

What I learned is I want to try my hand at After Effects (a ha, I actually have a full copy on my old laptop). A lot of students are making great progress with Movie Maker; Keelin found a link to the older 2.6 version that has more features than the current ones. Hannah used and shared a free Windows video editor that looks like it had a lot of good built in effects- check out Videopad. Quite a few students took advantage of the incompetech site for old style silent era music as well as the Internet Archive’s 78RPM collection.

The video assignments are a ton of work, we know it. The pace continues this week (and we have some room to relax the deadlines, so stop fretting).

While the assignments are intensive, do not forget to do a detailed write up in your blog post with your assignment work:

Include the name of the assignment and link back to the original on the assignments site.

What is the story behind your work? Why did you chose the subject, topic? What does it mean to you?

What is your process? Describe the tools used, steps to create the piece, sources of your media.

This is really to me a minimum of what makes a good assignment writeup. A strong post includes your own reflection, not just a narrating of the facts. It has a meaningful title, not just “Design Assignment”. If you are referencing movies, songs, characters, places- a stronger post includes hyperlinks to information web sites- the web is built on links- write for the web not just on it.

This Week’s Assignment

The 15 star goal is raised again this week – more work in the Video assignments category- (see the full post for weeks 9 and 10 on the ds106 site)- one of them needs to be the Movie Trailer Mashup assignment (note this is listed in the Mashup section but it is done as video). In this one, you should take the trailer of a movie you are familiar with, say the one you did for the essay assignment, and mash it up with content, or audio from something completely different- the goal is to use the trailer to completely change the plot or genre of the original.

Keep At the Project Thinking

I’ve been hearing and reading your ideas. Be writing on your blog and/or contacting me about the thoughts for your projects- I want to see a well crafted pitch for your concept completed by end of this week. Some things to gel your thoughts:

Past ds106 Projects Archive

Try and thik of a way to combine / mashup Items in the assignment bank

Look at some outside creaive exercises in the ds106 Idea Machine.

Talk to me if you would like to build some stories out of the content in my StoryBox, media not seen elsewhere on the web.

Other Stuff

If your YouTube video is blocked, you might want to try vimeo or this strategy for under fair use law disputing a takedown

Free Screencast software (Mac or PC) Jing or screenr

Other options for screen capture on Windows used by students in this class – Microsoft Expression Editor or Fraps.

Resources and Examples for Video Mashup/Remixes

Andy Rush, resident DTLT expert, creator of our video resource site just showed me a helpful tip for MPEG Stream Clip.

I’ve previously suggested using the Export – MPEG-4 option for saving your files, but he showed me that you will get a better quality video (and often a smaller file size) if you simply use the File -> Save As… option. This will keep the file in the same format it was, as it is not having to encode the video, it is also faster than converting.

Also, I’ve heard from one student that Windows Movie Maker may have trouble importing the downloaded internet video files. Dr Andy recommends the K-Lite Codec pack which will add support for playing most video types (but might nag you to edit your Windows Registry, ugh).

The other option is to convert the videos you downloaded to AVI, which Movie Maker can open- you can use MPEG stream clip to export to AVI – or google around a bit for free avi converters (there are online tools and downloadable ones).
