Organizing with WordPress Categories

By Posted in - Class Materials & How To & Spring 2012 UMW Tricks on January 24th, 2012 2 Comments

Justin had a good question about organizing his content, wanting a way to easily show just the things he publishes for his Daily Create. This is a job for Categories (to be fair, it could be done jut the same with tags, there’s not a significant difference between them).

I wanted to experiment with showing this via an audio screen cast, which demonstrates how to create categories, how to update existing posts to be included in new categories, how to use them on a new post, how to find the URL for you category page, and how to add a menu item to point to your category.

FYI I made this on my iPad with Explain Everything, made screenshots, annotated them, recorded audio, and upload directly to YouTube. That was easy!

Nice video there Alan. Categories and tags are the neural networks of blog publishing. There is another aspect of categories, and also tags, that is most useful for me. I would like to share it here, Alan.

Some themes allow you to create pages that “query” or check post categories and post tags upon publishing. For example, I have a wordpress page called “Gallery” and each time I publish a blog post with the category “photography” it will not only appear as a regular blog post it will also be published to my Gallery page as well.

Other pages on my site that function the same way also include those for Workshops, History News, Friday Follow and Technology. The catgeory determines to which page on my site the blog post will be associated. It is a great time saver.

    Cheers, John.
